COMING SOON - LV Tree Inventory

A vital tool for managing a community urban forest is a citywide tree inventory. A tree inventory is a GIS (geographical information system) mapping tool that identifies the exact location of city trees with site information. The information obtained through an inventory allows for identification of tree species that make up the urban forest, current tree health/condition, maintenance needs, and available planting locations.

The Lathrup Village Tree Committee will be performing this project over the next couple months to better understand the current state of the urban forest of Lathrup Village. This project is part of the long-term goal of creating a comprehensive and sustainable urban forest master plan. Through the volunteer efforts of the Tree Committee, this project will benefit the city’s tree program at no cost to the city's budget.

What will occur during the inventory process? Each tree within the city right-of-way, parks, and city property will be visited. Species identification, measurement of the tree DBH (diameter at breast height), and current condition will be measured. This information will be collected for the city’s use for priority maintenance needs and development of plans and goals.

More updates will be provided over the course of the project. We look forward to sharing our findings during this initiative and appreciate the ongoing support of our community.

🐾 Friendly Reminder to All Dog Owners 🐾

For the safety and comfort of everyone in our community, including pets, dogs must remain on a leash while in public spaces unless they are in a designated off-leash area.

City ordinance requires that dogs in parks, streets, sidewalks, and other public places be securely restrained by a leash and supervised by a responsible person. Dogs must also be properly immunized against rabies.

Keeping dogs leashed helps prevent accidents, protects wildlife, and ensures that all residents can enjoy our shared public spaces safely.

Thank you for being a responsible pet owner and helping keep our community safe and welcoming for everyone! 🐶

📢 Reminder for Lathrup Village Residents

Please be advised that the City of Lathrup Village maintains authority over public right-of-way areas throughout the community. This includes the right to remove or relocate items placed within the right-of-way, such as landscaping features, rocks, signs, posts, or other obstructions, when they interfere with utilities, public safety, roadway maintenance, sidewalks, drainage, or other municipal operations.

This authority also includes the maintenance, trimming, or removal of trees located within the right-of-way when deemed necessary for safety, infrastructure protection, or public access.

We appreciate residents’ cooperation in keeping the right-of-way clear so that City services can be performed safely and efficiently.

Thank you for helping keep Lathrup Village safe, accessible, and well-maintained. 🌳

🚫🦌 PSA: Please Do Not Feed Deer Within City Limits

While deer may seem friendly and harmless, feeding them can create serious problems for both residents and wildlife. Feeding deer encourages them to gather near homes and roads, increases the risk of vehicle accidents, spreads disease, and can lead to aggressive behavior toward people and pets.

Artificial feeding also disrupts their natural foraging habits and can damage neighborhood landscaping and vegetation.

For the safety of our community and the health of local wildlife, please do not place food out for deer within City limits.

Thank you for helping keep our neighborhoods safe and our wildlife wild.

Help Keep Our Rivers, Lakes, & Streams Clean

The chemicals in herbicides and pesticides pollute our waterways if washed from lawns and gardens into storm drains and roadside ditches. When lawns are overwatered, the excess water and herbicides carry pollution into our storm drains and ditches that lead directly to our rivers and lakes.

How can you maintain your garden and trees while protecting our waterways?

  • Go native
    • Select plants native to Michigan. Native plants are better able to tolerate Michigan’s climate, require less fertilizer and water, and are more disease resistant.
  • Plant a rain garden
    • Use native plants in low areas where rainwater collects in your yard to trap, absorb, and filter stormwater.
  • Diversify your plantings
    • Use a wide variety of plants to help control pests and minimize the need for pesticides.
  • Place a thick layer of mulch (four inches) around trees and plants
    • This helps retain water, reduce weeds, and minimize the need for pesticides.
  • Plant a tree
    • Trees can provide many benefits, such as soaking up water; that improves the environment and quality of life in your community. A typical, medium-sized tree can capture 2,380 gallons of rainwater per year.
  • Use pesticides and herbicides sparingly
    • Limit application of these chemicals to problem areas only.
  • Improve your aim
    • Adjust your sprinklers to water only your lawn and plants – not your driveway, sidewalk, or street.
  • Sweep it
    • Clean sidewalks and driveways with a broom instead of a hose. You’ll save water and keep unwanted pollutants out of the storm drain.
  • Rainwater to the rescue
    • Use rainwater to water your plants. Direct downspouts toward your plants and green areas or collect water with rain barrels for use later.

Outdoor Water Conservation

Did you know that as much as 50 percent of the water used outdoors is wasted from inefficient watering methods? The summer season is the time of the year when we consume the most water through outdoor usage. We have all been told to turn off faucets when we brush our teeth and to regularly inspect indoor fixtures for any leaks as part of water conservation initiatives. Similarly, to conserve outdoor water usage, there are a few steps you can take to use water efficiently.

WHEN: The optimal time to water lawns and other plants is in the early morning or evening. Avoid watering in the middle of the day when much of the water will evaporate before hydrating any plants.

HOW OFTEN: Be conscious of the local weather conditions and time your watering system accordingly. A rule of thumb to go by is that lawns only need up to one inch of water per week.

HOW LONG: Pooling water is a major indicator that overwatering is occurring. Turn off sprinklers if water begins to pool, and keep in mind that the majority of plants use less water than turf grass.

WHAT ELSE: Alternative methods to watering plants are available. Consider capturing rainwater through the use of a rain barrel or cistern. These water harvesting techniques not only conserve water, but can also reduce your water bill.

For more information on outdoor water conservation, please visit the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website at www.epa.gov.

Yard Waste & Chipping

Yard Waste pickup from Tringali resumed on Monday, April 6.

Curbside chipping services from Fontenot resumed on March 16. Curbside chipping services for the City will end on June 29.

Due to budget constraints, the City Council (during the 2/23 regular meeting) voted to cancel this City service at the end of the current fiscal year.

Effective July 1, 2026, property owners will be responsible for branch removal services. Suggestions include:

  • Property owner hires private chipping service at their own expense
  • Property owner breaks branches down and fits them within yard waste bags, which will still be collected
  • Property owner properly bundles brush (defined as being less than 2 inches in diameter and less than 4 feet long), which is collected by Tringali (yard waste)
  • Property owner burns branches within a proper fire pit on their property

This includes branches from trees located on adjacent tree lawns (ROW).
